Mike Brown takes the title

During the lead up to WEC 36 there was little talk of Mike Brown. Unless you trained with the guy you probably didn't even know who he was. I sure as hell didn't. I just knew that he had a few WEC wins under his belt and was scheduled to fight Urijah Faber. Brown shook things up Wednesday night with a well placed right hand that send Faber to the mat. Although he wasn't quiet out, Faber was pretty darn close. A few unanswered shots later and Mike Brown claimed the WEC featherweight title.

Faber, who now has two scars on his record, was very gracious in defeat making no excuses. If you didn't know Brown before you do now and you also know he fucking hits hard which is something he explained during his post fight interview. Brown seemed to have suffered some type of rib injury during the fight which was obvious during the post fight interview. Thanks to a big heart and heavy hands Brown is now a household name and the WEC featherweight champion.

We also learned something else at WEC 36. Paulo Filho has completely destroyed his mixed martial arts career in a very short period of time. Filho played dazed and confused into the cage during his rematch with Chael Sonnen which was originally scheduled as a title fight. Perhaps Filho's smartest move was not making weight in the first place? Had he made weight there is a good chance there would've been a new middleweight champion. A lack of dedication and a poor performance from Filho will likely reduce his chances of getting a future UFC contract.

Chael Sonnen didn't do anything impressive himself despite picking up the unanimous decision win over the WEC middleweight champion but at least he did something because Filho didn't. Both fighters might have been more spirited and motivated had the title have been on the line which is why Filho should be so ashamed of himself. Not only did he rob himself and Sonnen by not making weight but he also robbed the fans of what could've been an exciting fight.

Leonard Garcia moved one step closer to a title shot thanks to his quick tko victory over Jens Pulver. What was supposed to be a shootout ending up being a one man firing squad with Pulver in sights. Regardless of the defeat Pulver will forever be remember by mixed martial arts fans for many years to come. Perhaps his chin has degraded with age? Or maybe Garcia just has incredibly powerful hands?

Undefeated wrestler, Jake Rosholt, picked up a tko victory over Nissen Osterneck. Jake is new to the sport and still needs to improve in many areas until then he should remain on the undercard because he is so damn boring. I was pulling for Nissen because of the fact that he pushed the pace and actually made the fight pretty exciting. Jake on the other had was neither impressive nor exciting.
